The Dynasty Gala is back in full force with an evening on the theme of: Building Your Dynasty.
As the Gala enters its eighth edition with Naadei hosting the Media Evening and Garihanna Jean-Louis hosting the Culture Evening, an intense frenzy is being felt throughout the Montréal metropolis.
Although Dynasty Week will begin very soon with the Dynasty Brunch kick-off event, where we will see a dozen caterers (from different black communities in the Montreal area) reveal the extent of their culinary talent, we will also be able to witness the marriage of different Afro cultures through these gastronomic works.
Renowned partnerships
For this event, we will see the 3737 group present itself as one of the main partners of the Gala, ensuring at the same time the foreground of an in-depth discussion centered on the sustainability of funding for the Black community at the federal level.
This year’s Gala Dynastie also marks a real turning point with the implementation of the eco-responsible mentality. This year’s motto: ZERO WASTE! In partnership with a company that helps migrants from certain communities, the Gala Dynastie is committed this year to donating all surplus food to the organization.
Presentation of the second edition of the Media Evening
June 17, 2021 marked a significant milestone with the creation of the Dynasty Media Awards. This event, now annual, was designed for those who might not be familiar with its raison d’être. The concept, while simple, is deeply rooted in a cultural and social necessity: to address the glaring lack of representation in traditional media, which has been widely criticized in recent years. The Gala Dynastie inaugurated this specific evening to highlight the relentless dynamism of media professionals from various Black communities, as well as the emergence of diversified media platforms such as television shows, web series, blogs and podcasts, reflecting the cultural richness of Montreal and Quebec as a whole.
The importance of this evening also lies in its ability to provide a showcase for voices that might otherwise remain in the shadows, thus allowing for deserved recognition and increased visibility. Among the flagship media outlets honoured during the evening were Rapolitik, known for its commitment to rap (and music) culture affecting Black communities, Qculture, which celebrates cultural diversity through innovative content, and The Black Theater Workshop, a pioneer in the staging of African-Canadian realities. These entities, along with many other pillars of Quebec’s media industry, contribute not only to enriching the media landscape, but also to forging an inclusive and representative dialogue.
This second edition doesn’t just build on the momentum of the previous one; It aims to strengthen connections between content creators from diverse backgrounds and promote a deeper understanding of the issues facing Black communities, while celebrating the successes and innovations that emanate from these same communities.
Celebrating Excellence at the Gala Dynastie Tribute Awards
On March 14, 2024, the Dynasty Foundation announced the recipients of the prestigious Tribute Awards for the 8th edition of the Dynasty Gala. This year, five eminent personalities from the Black communities, recognized for their notable impact in various fields, will be honoured during the Media Night and the Culture Night, which will take place respectively on April 21 at the Cinquième Salle and April 27 at the Théâtre Maisonneuve. Among them, Corneille, celebrated by the Icon Dynasty Award for his artistic audacity and impressive career. In addition to his successful music career, Corneille co-founded Maison Kanda, a label dedicated to the development of Soul and R&B artists, strengthening his position as a leader in the music industry. His work at Maison Kanda contributed to the introduction of the new R&B/Soul/Francophone Gospel category at the Premier Gala de l’ADISQ, enriching the Quebec cultural scene.
At the same time, Dr. Oliver Jones was honored with the Grand Prix Dynastie (Doudou-Boicel Prize) for his outstanding career and lasting influence in the world of jazz. A revered musician, he not only left his mark on the history of music but also served as a mentor to future generations. Mikaben, meanwhile, was posthumously awarded the Dynasty Heritage Award, recognizing his indelible contribution to Haitian music and his role as an ambassador of Haitian culture internationally. These awards illustrate the richness and diversity of talent within Black communities and highlight their invaluable contribution to global culture.
These honours, awarded at the Gala Dynastie, testify to the vitality of the contributions of Black communities in the media and cultural spheres, thus highlighting the importance of these personalities in the social and cultural fabric of Quebec and beyond. The Gala is thus a key moment of recognition and celebration of diversity and excellence.
A Torch of Diversity and Excellence
As Dynasty Week prepares to kick off tomorrow with the Media Night hosted by Naadei, this eighth edition of the Dynasty Gala confirms its essential role as a catalyst in the promotion and recognition of the talents of Black communities. The distinctions awarded illustrate the richness and diversity of contributions that enrich Québec’s cultural and media landscape. By celebrating the likes of Corneille, Dr. Oliver Jones and Mikaben, the Dynasty Gala doesn’t just highlight exemplary careers; It inspires an entire community to continue its commitment to greater representativeness and excellence, strengthening the foundations of a more inclusive and vibrant society. This new edition marks not only a moment of festivity but also a promising turning point for culture and the media within the city.
